tar (Derivative for tape archive) is an archival format made by AT&T in 1979 for System 7 UNIX originally intended for backing up on tape drives.
It does not compress files on its own, that's up to gunzip, bunzip, etc. That's why you see tar archives that may say .tar.gz or .tar.bz instead of just .tar

The Best and good file archive format (originally for backing up files on tape drives) ever. It was even created by AT&T in 1979, just 10 years before .zip was created
Forgive .zip, use tarballs of programs for downloading programs
.7z is good friends of Tar for 7-Zip
