tar (Derivative for tape archive) is an archival format made by AT&T in 1979 for System 7 UNIX originally intended for backing up on tape drives.

It does not compress files on its own, that's up to gunzip, bunzip, etc.

Version by User3412 (warning: might have false information)

The Best and good file archive format (originally for backing up files on tape drives) ever. It was even created by AT&T in 1979, just 10 years before .zip was created

Forgive .zip, use tarballs of programs for downloading programs

.7z is good friends of Tar for 7-Zip
